When company founders Dr. David Williams and Jerry Germann began discussions about opening their company, they were puzzled by what to call it. They considered a number of combinations of names and locations, and finally decided that a merger of parts of their own names made sense. Dr. Williams proposed the Burks name from his father's side of the family. When combined with the last syllable of Jerry Germann's surname, Burkmann announced itself loud and clear. "The name represented a piece of each of us," Dr. Williams says, "And so it does today. We always find it amusing when someone calls claiming to know Mr. Burkmann and demanding to speak to him."
